Technical Terms
You don't need to understand how the technology in isisOne works, but for here is a brief summary of some of the terms you may encounter.
ACID
All Microsoft SQL Server Transactions are guaranteed to have the following, ACID properties:
Atomicity
Each transaction is treated as all or nothing. It either succeeds or fails, and if it fails, all of its effects are undone.
Consistency
Consistency ensures that the database doesn't arrive at an incorrect logical state.
Isolation
Isolation separates the current transaction from all other updates and transactions. This is the property that makes it possible to work correctly with multiple database users without suffering from undesirable side effects.
Durability
Durability means that after a transaction has been committed, the effects of the transaction persist even if a system failure occurs.
Access Point
An Access Point is a device which manages the radio traffic for a wireless Local Area Network (LAN).
EAN / UCC
The EAN ( GS-1 in the UK) and UCC are governing councils who issue the bar code numbers used on retail products.
Every product in your local supermarket carries either an 8 or 13 digit EAN8 or EAN13 bar code.
LAN - Local Area Network
The network created by connecting several computers together in and office is called a Local Area Network or LAN. This gives everyone connected to the LAN the opportunity to share resources like printers and disk space.
Compare with WAN
Stored Procedure
Stored procedures are the building blocks of database applications - they are only available in client/server type databases like the one isisOne uses. They provide numerous security and performance advantages. They also provide an important layer of insulation between the software and the underlying data - which makes for better system design.
SQL - Structured (English) Query Language
Usually pronounced 'sequel', this is a database query and manipulation language developed by by IBM in the 1970s.
Some desktop databases also use SQL, and you may be familiar with commands like SELECT * FROM ORDER_TABLE.
isisOne implements ALL SQL via Stored Procedures.
Table
A database typically contains many tables, each table is designed to store one particular type of record: an order table, an employee table etc.
isisOne consists of many tables that hold your data.
Transaction Processing
Transactions guarantee the consistency and recoverability of your database.
In practice, this means that the system can make changes to several tables - but these are not finalised until every change in the transaction has been confirmed.
These transactions are said to have ACID properties.
It's near impossible to design a safe, reliable database system without using Transaction Processing.
VPN Virtual Private Network
A VPN is a private network created within a public network. For isisOne we create a safe, private network connection to our servers using the internet (the public network).
WAN Wide Are Network
A Computer network that covers a large geographical area, and which may include several LANs connected together is called a Wide Area Network or WAN. isisOne uses VPN technology to give you all the effective benefits of a WAN
WiFi - Wireless
This is a wireless LAN created by at lease one Access Point. It provides connectivity to wireless devices within an office or warehouse environment.
Wireless networks use variations on the IEEE 802.11 standard. Devices commonly comply to 802.11a, 802.11b or 802.11g modulation techniques - these work at different frequencies and have differing data transfer rates and coverage properties.
